Kapas island is just 4 nautical
miles from Marang. It's is an ideal place to break away and chill it out. Pulau
Kapas is made up of two islands Pulau Gemia and Pulau Kapas. Pulau Kapas is
about easy access, choices and plenty of bargain. Places to stay ranging from
camping sites to dormitory to island resorts with en suite facilities. Only
thing that never change on this island is the constant number of backpackers
arriving and departing each day.
The reefs surrounding Pulau Kapas ranges in depth from 3-20 metres. It has good
marine life and coral despite being located so close to the mainland (only 6km
from the coastal village of Marang). Varieties of fish that can be seen here
include Moorish idols, Wrasses, and Butterfly fishes.
The best time to go diving is between the months of May and October as the
visibility is excellent. However, it is best not to visit the island between the
months of November and February as it is affected by the northeast monsoon.
There can be days when the rain is heavier than usual and the waves can get
quite big.
Getting There
Marang Jetty
Marang is a a picturesque fishing village 30 minutes south of Kuala Terengganu.
The only jetty to the Kapas Island.
By Boat
The only way to go there is by the sea especially a boat services from
Marang.
Boat from Marang to Kapas Island take about 10 minutes journey by fast boat,
RM30 / person / 2 ways. Boat transfer service may start as early as 7:00.
By bus
Take the express coach to the bus terminal Tanjung, Kuala Terengganu. Take a
taxi from the bus station Tanjung to Marang. There are no bus services directly
to the Marang jetty. In Kuala Terengganu you can either charter a taxi or a van
to take you to the Marang jetty.
By flight
Direct air services from Kuala Lumpur to Kuala Terengganu are provided by
Malaysia Airlines
on a daily basis and Air Asia.
NOTE: A taxi from Kuala Terengganu airport or the bus terminal costs RM
30.00 per cab for the journey to Marang Jetty.
Activity
Snorkeling - It is promoted
as a "snorkeling paradise", with several dive resorts and coral reefs.Explore
the most varied marine life among the many coral reefs around the island.
Snorkeling and underwater diving is popular along stretches of shallow coral
reefs of the island's western shore.
Diving - A few dive shops offer the basic gears and instructions.The key
attraction for diving at Pulau Kapas is the World WarII shipwreck located 5
nautical miles offshore.
Fishing - March till
October every year is always the best season to throw your hook to the sea.
Experienced anglers usually come in prepared. Boats are available for rental in
most of the resort.
Jungle trekking - Pulau Perhentian's lush rain forest on the island is a
particularly favorable destination for trekking, as the island's remarkable
biodiversity is matched by a good network of jungle trails where one can
experience the hundreds of species of flora and animal inhabitants.
Windsurfing - Pulau Kapas is well know as the place for windsurfing, for
those who like the sea-sport, must try it out!!
