Tasik Kenyir is the largest man-made lake in South East Asia. It was constructed
between 1978 and 1985. Sultan Mahmud Hydro Electric Power Plant., built in 1985
for generating electricity, this dam holds approximately 23.6 million cubic
meters of water and occupies 38000 hectares.
Tasik Kenyir is a showcase of 340 islands. The islands on Tasik Kenyir are the
tips of highlands and hilltops which were not submerged during the flooding.
There are 30 rivers feeding the lake, 25 waterfalls and at least 25 known
species of fish. Therefore Tasik Kenyir is known as an angler's haven for
fishing. For anglers are arranged special trips by private boat operators. They
know the best location. Please be informed that a fishing permit is required
from the Wildlife Department only when you to enter National Park such as Sungai
Cacing & Sungai Terenggan.
Kenyir luxurious forest is located in the district of Hulu Terengganu, which
lies at a longitude of 102 degree 40 minutes and 4 degree and 40 minutes in
latitude. It is believed that the rain forest is the world oldest tropical
rainforest. The forest also serves as a part of Malaysia National Park.
Getting There
Kenyir Lake
Approximately 55 km from Kuala Terengganu. Gawi Jetty
is the main gateway to the lake beside Pengkalan Utama. It is completed with Tourist
Information Centre and Wildlife Department and a parking place for most of the houseboats.
By Bus
A direct bus service, the Tasik Kenyir Express departs daily at 8.00pm from Hentian
Putra in Kuala Lumpur to Tasik Kenyir via Al-Muktaffi Billah Shah Town and Kuala
Berang.

For the traveler from Penang, Johor, Melaka, Perak and Sebilan, you can take the
public coach to the Kuala Terengganu, bus terminal Tanjung. Then you need the land
transfer to the Tasik Kenyir by taxi. Some of the resorts or travel agencies provide
the bus station pick up service.
By Car
From Kuala Lumpur
From Karak Highway heading east, take Route no.2 to Kuantan. Follow this route all
the way to Kuantan. (240km from KL). Just before entering Kuantan town, take the
Kuantan bypass on the left. The road panel indicates 'to Kuala Terengganu & Kuantan
Airport'. This is Route no.14. Travel down this route for another 208km until you
reach 'Ajil'. From here take Route no. R106 to Kuala Berang. (another 49km). From
Kuala Berang turn into Route no.11 and travel for another 35km to the turning into
Tasik Kenyir. The road turning into Tasik Kenyir is Route no. T159. You are now
in Tasik Kenyir territory. Another 12km from the turning, you will see the 'welcome
to tasik kenyir' arch on the left. Pengkalan Gawi is the take-off point into the
lake. Travelling time: approximately 6 to 7 hours.
Alternative route:
If you have the time and would like to see a little more of the coastal towns of
Terangganu and Pahang, then take the coastal road. From Karak Highway heading east,
take Route no.2 to Kuantan. Follow this route all the way to Kuantan. (240km from
KL). From Kuantan follow Route no.3 all the way pass Kemaman, Dungun to Kuala Terengganu.
From Kuala Terengganu, head for Tasik Kenyir.
By air
Malaysian Airlines have regular scheduled flights to Kuala Terengganu. Please check
out malaysian airlines for time schedule.
From Kuala Terengganu airport, catch a taxi to Pengkalan Gawi at Tasik Kenyir.
By boat
It is close to not possible to enjoy the tranquil scenery and atmosphere of
the lake without a boat. There are a number of boat operators parking their
fibre glass boats as well as double decks houseboat at Gawi Jetty. Prior booking
is advisable. Some travel agencies offer package tours inclusive of activities
arrangement. Call and check for more detail.
Activity
Fishing - There are three main categories of fishing; sea angling, course
fishing and game fishing. Both coarse and game fishing are practiced in
freshwater, differing in the fishes. The fish species come into hundreds of
count and there are several techniques of fishing too. In the case of water
authority reservoirs, the license includes permission.
Boat tour - to the numerous coves and valleys and absorb the beauty of
the tropical jungle.This is real frontier land minus the uncertainties. Every
tributary and corner is so natural.
Waterfall - most of the waterfall have ample space for the picnic crowd
and safe pools to swim. Others like this one can be view from the boat. This
group here was more interested in getting their fishes than the view of the
waterfall.
