Named after the second Prime Minister of Malaysia, the circular Kompleks Tun
Abdul Razak building or popularly known as KOMTAR, which was built in 1978, is
one of the most easily recognisable landmarks in Georgetown. Standing at 65
stories and 232 metres high (761 feet), this prominent building houses various
Government departments as well as commercial offices, department stores,
supermarkets, shops and restaurants.
Besides that, this complex also contains theatres, squash courts and a geodesic
dome which serves as a multi-purpose hall. KOMTAR is a focal point for business,
meetings and conventions, shows and sports events. The Penang Tour Guide
Association can also be found here, at the Tourist information Centre at Level
3.
If you happen to be there, do visit the observation floor located on the 55th
floor. There, one can have a breathtaking view of the city and Gunung Jerai in
Kedah.
Travel Advice
KOMTAR also happens to be one of the main bus stops in Georgetown. Nearly all
busses that pass through the city will make a stop here. So its a great place to
use as a meeting point if you travel in groups.
